Invoice vs receipt

People mix these documents up because both list money and line items. The timing of payment is the difference that matters.

Invoice

Send an invoice when work is done or goods are delivered and payment is still outstanding. It should identify both parties, describe the work, and state the amount due.

Receipt

A receipt is issued after payment. It confirms that the amount was received. FIXTET does not currently generate receipts; do not relabel an unpaid invoice as a receipt.

What to put on the invoice

Unique number, issue date, due date or terms, seller and client details, line items, tax if you charge it, and payment instructions. That is enough for most freelance and small-business invoices.

FAQ

Should I send an invoice and a receipt for the same job?
Often yes: invoice first, receipt after the payment clears. They are not interchangeable files.
Can FIXTET number invoices automatically?
Saved automatic numbering is part of Invoice Pro. The free generator still lets you type a number on each PDF.
